Abu Abdullah Sidi Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahid Ibn al-Kabir al-Kattani (Arabic: محمد الكبير الكتاني) was born in Fes and raised in an orphanage after his father passed away several months before his birth. He became one of the most well-known Gnostics in Morocco.

He took from a number of scholars and saintly figures including the famous Shaykh Muhammad ibn al-Qasim al-Qandusi, who was his main reliance and to whom he was ascribed spiritually. It is said that on their very first meeting, which took place in the al-Qarawiyyin Mosque, Imam al-Qandusi bought Shaykh Muhammad al-Kabir into the presence of the Prophet ﷺ in a wakeful vision.

He founded the Kattani Tariqa in 1862 (1278 AH) and set up zawiya where he taught his disciples and students hadith and tawassuf amongst other sciences. He also authored more than 40 books including Uloom al Muhammadiyya and Rihla Fath al-Mubin. The tariqa was later developed by his son and spiritual successor Sidi Abdul Kabir ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahid Ibn al-Kabir al-Kattani.

He passed away on 26 Dhul Qadah 1234 AH (1819) and was buried in his Zawiya. His son, Sidi Abdul Kabir passed away on 26 Rabiul Awwal 1333 AH (1915) and was laid to rest next to his father.  The Kattani Tariqa continued through his son ash-Shahid Muhammad ibn Abdul Qadir and Sidi Abdul Hayy al-Kattani.
